THE TOP TEN FAKE BANDS OF ALL TIME

What's better than an actual band playing actual music? Why, a phony band playing phony music, of course! Remember the Monkees? Yeah, sixty percent of that band couldn't play their own instruments and they became hugely popular! Don't believe me? Look it up! Anyway, so many shows, movies, books, web sites, and every other thing has a fake band or a couple of people who want to be musicians. So, here's a little list with 10 of the most well known not-real bands of all time.

10) STILLWATER
Almost Famous is a 2000 comedy-drama film written and directed by Cameron Crowe. It tells a fictional story of a teenage journalist writing for Creem and Rolling Stone magazines while covering the rock band Stillwater, and his efforts to get his first cover story published. The film is semi-autobiographical, as Crowe himself was a teenage writer for Rolling Stone.

9) THE RIVERBOTTOM NIGHTMARE BAND

The story tells about Emmet Otter and his widowed mother, who each want to buy the other something special for Christmas. They each are aware that the other wants something very particular and, unfortunately, very expensive. Emmet entertains his friends' idea of putting together a jug band and entering the local talent contest, which has a prize of $50. To do this, though, he has to punch a hole in the bottom of his mother's metal washtub to make a washtub bass. Emmet's mother, meanwhile, takes the tool chest Emmet inherited from his father and pawns it to buy fabric for a new dress, so that she might also enter the talent contest. Neither is aware of the other's intentions or actions. Also entering in the talent show at the extreme last minute is the Riverbottom Gang, who have put together a rock group called 'The River Bottom Nightmare Band'. There are some run-ins between everyone leading up to the big event. Unfortunately, although Emmet's mother and the Jug Band get an excellent reception from the talent show audience, the Riverbottom Gang wins the contest.

8) BILLY AND THE BOINGERS

Billy and the Boingers is a fictional heavy metal rock band from the comic strip Bloom County, originally known as Deathtöngue.

Most of the Deathtöngue saga is contained in the Bloom County collection Billy And The Boingers Bootleg which included a flexi-disk containing what were apparently two songs by the band: "I'm a Boinger" and "U-Stink-But-I-♥-U".

  • "I'm a Boinger", written by Dallas, is the apparent response of Billy and the Boingers after the name change. It was actually played by the Harry Pitts Band.
  • "U-Stink-But-I-♥-U" is a song written by Bill the Cat. The song was played in reality by the band Mucky Pup.

The "liner notes" on the inside cover of Billy and the Boingers Bootleg are a parody of the thank you section in the Master of Puppets iner notes. They are both punctuated similarly and both mention "xtra freakin' yahooz." (It was "xtra fucken yahooz" in Master of Puppets.) Billy and the Boingers thank the "Boingers Metalbashers" whereas Metallica thank the " Bay Area Metallibashers."

7) WYCKED SCEPTER
Mr. Show (also known as Mr. Show with Bob and David) was a sketch comedy series featuring former SNL writer/comedy actor Bob Odenkirk and stand-up comedian/actor David Cross. It aired on HBO from 1995-98. This band is completely fictional, obviously, and does a fine, round-about way, job of poking fun at, well, you get the idea.

6) LIMOZEEN
The Homestar Runner site frequently features songs and videos within their animated shorts or as stand-alone entities, which serve as parodies of hair metal, death metal, college rock, and hip hop. These are primarily sung and performed either by the characters or by fictitious rock bands with names such as "Limozeen," "☮y P" (read "Peacey P"), “sloshy,” "Brainkrieg," and “Taranchula.” Real-life musicians They Might Be Giants have also appeared semi-regularly, performing with a Homestar puppet or allowing the characters to perform a video to their song Experimental Film. The site-generated music has enjoyed surprising popularity, such that commercial CDs are now sold and two songs, "Trogdor" by the character Strong Bad, and "Because It's Midnite" by Limozeen, have been included in the successful Guitar Hero video games.

5) WYLD STALLYNS

Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Winter) and Ted "Theodore" Logan (Reeves) (or simply "Bill & Ted") are two hard rock-obsessed teenagers in San Dimas, California who are about to flunk out of high school because they are failing history class. The only way they can pass history is to get an A+ on their upcoming history report. This situation is particularly "heinous" because Ted's authoritarian father, Capt. Logan, has threatened to ship him to the Alaskan Military Academy (run by the psychotic Colonel Oats) if he flunks. Miraculously, a guitar-playing guru named Rufus (Carlin) arrives from the San Dimas of the year 2688 to help them pass a vital history report, because their garage band Wyld Stallyns holds the key to world peace and ultimate truth. However, they will not achieve this destiny if they flunk out and Ted is shipped to Alaska. Rufus lends them a time machine disguised as a phone booth to help them get an A+ on their oral report.

4) JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS
Josie and the Pussycats was an American Animated Television Series produced for Saturday Morning TV by Hanna-Barberra in 1970 for CBS. In 1972, Hanna-Barbera produced a spin-off called Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space, which ran until 1974. Based upon the Archie Comics series of the same name created by Dan DeCarlo, Josie and the Pussycats featured an all-girl pop music band that toured the world with their entourage, getting mixed up in strange adventures, spy capers, and mysteries.

3) THE ELECTRIC MAYHEM

Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem is the name of a Muppet rock band that appeared on The Muppet Show. Following The Muppet Show, they have appeared in various Muppet movies and TV specials and have also recorded album tracks. Dr. Teeth was designed by Jim Henson, while the rest of the original band members were designed by Michael K. Frith. Their most famous song was "Can You Picture That" from the Muppet Movie. The band consisted of Dr. Teeth (band leader and piano), Janice (guitar), Sgt. Floyd Pepper (bass guitar), Zoot (saxophone) and Animal (drums). In season five, Lips joined the band. Animal, Floyd and Zoot also played in the Muppet Show pit band, performing the opening and closing themes and underscoring most of the Muppet Show performances. Lips and occasionally Janice appeared in the orchestra in later episodes.

2) ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS
Alvin and the Chipmunks is a five-time Grammy Award-winning animated music group created by Ross Bagdasarian Sr. in 1958. The group consists of three singing animated chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group; Simon, the tall, bespectacled intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable sweetheart. The trio is "managed" by their human "father" and confidant, David Seville. In reality, David Seville was Bagdasarian's stage name, and the Chipmunks themselves are named after the executives of their original record label.

1) SPINAL TAP

Spınal Tap is a mostly fictitious heavy metal band, the subject of the 1984 Mockumentary film This is Spinal Tap. The film was accompanied by a Soundtrack Album. of the same name. In the years since the film was made the actors who portrayed the band members have played concerts and released music under the Spınal Tap name, blurring the line between parody and reality. The band members are portrayed by Michale McKean (as lead singer David St.Hubbins), Christopher Guest (as guitarist Nigel Tufnel), and Harry Shearer (as bassist Derek Smalls). They first appeared in a 1978 ABC comedy special, The TV Show.

This Blog thing I enjoy has literally made me a name it at least Azerbaijan and in some locations deep in the Congo... so that's cool. Besides infrequently putting forth minimal effort doing a blog, I also try a fair bit harder to make people laugh in their cereal over at GUNAXIN.COM, which is where I actually get paid to make up stupid stuff and use foul language. Anyway... why are you still reading this? Oh, and while you're here, you might as well go check out my DeviatArt page, too! http://stewwriter.deviantart.com/
